Split Level

Many of the pieces in this exhibit happen to be of split level homes. The 1960s suburban subdivision in which I live is full of them. They were likely built from plans sourced from a book of tract house designs. I would pore over these for hours as a young child, reclining on the floor of the family construction business office. The mass produced plans are, in a way, an embodiment of North American middle class life since the end of WWII; each of life’s functions neatly organized to take place in small-ish designated areas.

Split Level can also describe my state of mind while completing these pieces. Like many others in 21st century society, I’ve subscribed to the cult of busyness. To complete my long lists, I compartmentalize various responsibilities, putting them into separate rooms in my mind to get on with completing the task at hand.
